Two young brothers go missing in the midst of a bloody whale slaughter outside the remote Faroes fishing village of Djevulsfjord. Tristan Haraldsen and his wife Elsebeth are newly arrived outsiders from the city, looking forward to a peaceful semi-retirement in the extraordinary, wild landscape of Vágar. But the disappearance of the Mikkelsen brothers bears heavily on Tristan, who had been tasked with supervising the whale hunt. As he and his wife start to ask questions, they uncover evidence that the two boys aren't the only ones to have vanished from the introverted and struggling community where they grew up. As they attempt to lift the veil over Djevulsfjord's past, Tristan and Elsebeth come to realize the wild beauty of the region hides even darker and more deadly riddles, secrets which could make the curious vanish just as easily into Vágar's bleak hills.
