About
Lambert Strether undertakes a seemingly straightforward ambassadorial task on behalf of his wealthy fiancee and benefactress Mrs. Newsome: to go to Europe and exhort her long-absent son Chad to return home to Woolett, Massachusetts, where he is needed in the family business. It is a mission of salvation, for Chad appears to have fallen prey to a "wicked woman". Stretcher's own fortunes are inextricably bound up with a successful outcome, yet he, like Chad, soon falls under the spell both of Parisian life and the mystery woman - charming, cultured Madame de Vionnet. He finds Chad much changed - confident and refined - and any remaining enthusiasm for his mission quickly wanes. Mrs. Newsome responds by dispatching a second wave of emissaries led by her daughter, who is steelier in her resolve...In The Ambassadors, which James considered his finest work, he revisitis his key theme: the culture clash between the Old and New Worlds, the contrasting manners of peoples born and raised on opposites sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
